About Sparwood and area...

SparwoodDeep in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, there’s a beautiful valley where a small coal mining town called Sparwood nestles. A river runs through, called the Elk. The valley is also called the Elk, named for the abundance of wild game—elk, deer, bear, cougar, moose, lynx, beaver, wild sheep, goats, wild turkeys, and bobcat.

Elk ValleyThe Elk River has Kokanee, the fabled inland salmon, as well as grayling and brook trout. Hiking and biking trails (PDF) abound, and a jewel of a lake is 25 minutes from town.

Rich in natural resources, timber, coal, and wild game, Sparwood is also a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. World famous Fernie ski hill is 20 minutes away and there is a beautiful golf course in town.

Outside are two kid’s parks, beach volley ball courts, tennis courts, a track, a soccer field and a ball diamond. Still very much a small town, Sparwood has an ingenuous, unspoiled charm. It’s not Shangri La, but its close.

Come visit a real B.C. mining town and see for yourself.
